Associate Professor Michael von Papen is an accomplished surgeon and respected academic with over two decades of experience in his field. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Queensland before embarking on his surgical training, which culminated in him being awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2002. Subsequently, he pursued further training in colon and rectal surgery with the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, becoming a highly skilled specialist in this area. Since 2005, Michael has worked as a consultant surgeon at the Gold Coast University Hospital, developing a reputation as an expert in his field. He has held a number of leadership positions within the hospital, including Director of Surgery and Head of the Colorectal Unit, and is due to take over as Director of the Department of Surgery shortly. As part of his role, Michael provides consultations and surgical services to patients with a range of colorectal issues, utilising his expertise in minimally invasive procedures, including robotics, to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. He also has a particular interest in abdominal wall reconstruction. In addition to his clinical work, Michael holds teaching positions at both Griffiths and Bond Universities, where he is known for his passion for educating the next generation of medical professionals. He is also a member of the Australian Minimally Invasive Colorectal Investigators group, contributing to multi-centre clinical research aimed at improving the care and treatment of colorectal conditions. With his impressive record of excellence in both clinical practice and academic pursuits, Michael von Papen is a leader in the field of colorectal surgery.
