Fueled by his passion for ophthalmology, he pursued further specialization and earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Ophthalmology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2005. To broaden his expertise, Dr Wijesinghe pursued a fellowship in general and pediatric ophthalmology at the renowned Save Sight Institute at the University of Sydney in 2008. This comprehensive training equipped him with the necessary skills to perform a variety of ophthalmic surgeries, with a particular focus on cataract surgery, which he has been successfully performing at Darwin Private Hospital. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Wijesinghe has made significant contributions to the field through his work at the Royal Darwin Hospital. He has spent 11 years leading the outreach team of ophthalmology, providing essential eye care services to remote and rural communities in the Top End. This dedication to outreach ophthalmology services led to his recognition as a finalist for the Chief Minister's Award in 2015. Dr Wijesinghe is also actively involved in the education and training of future eye specialists. He supervises and trains registrars in ophthalmology, orthoptists, optometrists, and medical students at the Royal Darwin Hospital. Additionally, he serves as a term supervisor for the Sydney Eye Hospital ophthalmology registrar program and acts as an examiner in basic sciences for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
