A/Prof Anthony Kwan

Associate Professor Anthony Kwan is an exceptionally skilled ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal surgery. As the Director of the Vitreoretinal Service at the Queensland Eye Institute, he has established himself as an expert in the field of retina and macula diseases. Dr Kwan's areas of expertise include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment. He regularly performs cataract and vitrectomy operations at various clinics in Brisbane.

Known for his exceptional communication skills, Dr Kwan prioritises a holistic approach to patient care. He believes in building strong relationships with his patients and their families, ensuring they feel informed and supported throughout their treatment journey.

Dr Kwan obtained his schooling and medical training in England before specialising in ophthalmology in London. He gained invaluable experience during his tenure at Moorfields Eye Hospital, one of the world's leading eye hospitals. This extensive training equipped him with the expertise to handle complex retinal diseases, including emergencies such as wet age-related macular degeneration and retinal detachment.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Kwan has made significant research contributions to the field of ophthalmology. He received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Institute of Ophthalmology at the University of London, focusing on experimental retinal transplantation. His research has been published in esteemed clinical ophthalmology and scientific journals.

As an examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), Dr Kwan actively mentors and educates junior doctors. He is committed to advancing the field of ophthalmology through education and professional development.

Despite his extensive expertise, Dr Kwan remains approachable and dedicated to providing high-quality care. He extends his specialist services to patients in the gold Coast and Northern NSW regions, consulting at The Gold Coast Eye Clinic in Southport and The Eye Care Clinic in Coolangatta.

Dr Kwan also collaborates as a co-investigator on various significant research projects, including grants from the NHMRC (Australia) and the Macular Disease Foundation (MDF Australia) with Professor Damien Harkin at the Queensland Eye Institute.
