Dr Eline Whist is an experienced Ophthalmologist based in Tiwi, a suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. She specializes in cataract surgery, uveitis, medical retina, and Indigenous eye health. Dr Whist completed her medical degree through the University of Newcastle in 2004 and has since dedicated her career to providing comprehensive eye care.
Originally from Norway, Dr Whist relocated to Australia to pursue her medical career. She has a strong passion for providing healthcare to underserved populations and has volunteered with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Burkina Faso, West Africa, and the Central African Republic. She also worked as a rural General Practitioner in Norway, furthering her commitment to serving rural communities.
Dr Whist completed her specialization in Ophthalmology through the Sydney Eye Hospital training network and gained further expertise through a fellowship with the Fred Hollows Foundation in Fiji and Alice Springs. Currently, Dr Whist is a consultant Ophthalmologist at Darwin Eye Surgeons at Darwin Private Hospital, where she provides exceptional care to her patients. She also holds a position as a staff specialist in ophthalmology at the Royal Darwin Hospital and serves as a locum Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) in ophthalmology at Alice Springs Hospital. Dr Whist actively participates in outreach services to communities in Katherine, Gove, and other remote areas, ensuring that quality eye care is accessible to all.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr Whist is dedicated to the education and training of future ophthalmologists, junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals. She is actively involved in clinical research, leading to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr Whist also holds an Honorary Fellow title with the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney and serves as a committee member of the Australia and New Zealand Eye Foundation (ANZEF) and the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).
