Dr Nishantha Wijesinghe

Dr. Nishantha Wijesinghe is a highly skilled and experienced ophthalmologist with a special interest in various areas of the field. With over 18 years of experience, he has established himself as a reputable eye surgeon, particularly in cataract surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, medical retina, and glaucoma.

Dr. Wijesinghe graduated from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1998, earning his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). He further pursued his passion for ophthalmology and obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Ophthalmology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2005.

To expand his expertise, he completed a fellowship in general and pediatric ophthalmology at the Save Sight Institute, University of Sydney in 2008. His training equipped him with the necessary skills to perform various ophthalmic surgeries, particularly cataract surgery, which he has been conducting at Darwin Private Hospital.

Dr. Wijesinghe's contribution to the field extends beyond his clinical practice. He has dedicated 11 years at the Royal Darwin Hospital, leading the outreach team of ophthalmology. His team provides exceptional eye care to remote and rural communities in the Top End. Dr. Wijesinghe's work in outreach ophthalmology services made him a finalist for the Chief Minister's Award in 2015.

Alongside his clinical and outreach work, Dr. Wijesinghe actively trains and supervises registrars in ophthalmology, orthoptists, optometrists, and medical students at the Royal Darwin Hospital. He is also a term supervisor for the Sydney Eye Hospital ophthalmology registrar program. Demonstrating his commitment to the advancement of the field, Dr. Wijesinghe serves as an examiner in basic sciences for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
