Dr Paul Beaumont's profile

Dr Paul Beaumont is a greatly respected ophthalmologist specialising in medical retinal diseases, with a particular focus on macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and neuro ophthalmology. Based in Sydney, Australia, Dr Beaumont has been at the forefront of his field for over thirty years.

Dr Beaumont obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the prestigious University of New South Wales in 1966 and went on to complete his Fellowship at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1974. He trained under the late Professor Fred Hollows, a renowned figure in the field of ophthalmology.

Throughout his career, Dr Beaumont has been actively involved in patient care, teaching, and research. He has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and is frequently invited to speak at international meetings, sharing his expertise and insights.

Dr Beaumont holds several significant positions within the medical community. He serves as the Chairman of the NSW branch of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and has also held the role of Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen of all the Medical Colleges. In these roles, he has worked closely with the government in developing legislation related to medical negligence and the Optometric Act.

Drawing on his interest in macular degeneration, Dr Beaumont founded the Macular Degeneration Foundation and has played an instrumental role in advocating for patients' interests within the Department of Health. Additionally, he is actively involved in raising community awareness about the growing prevalence of blindness caused by this condition.

Dr Beaumont currently holds the position of Chairman at the Eye and Vision Research Institute and serves on the editorial board of two esteemed journals, Clinical Experimental Ophthalmology and Graefes Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. He is also a member of various pharmaceutical National and International Advisory Boards and provides advisory services to Blackmore's Nutraceutical company. However, it's important to note that he does not receive payment from Blackmores. Instead, Blackmores generously donates funds to both the Macular Degeneration Foundation, established by Dr Beaumont, and a project aimed at reducing blindness in Myanmar.

With his extensive experience, outstanding qualifications, and ongoing contributions to research and patient care, Dr Paul Beaumont remains a respected figure in the field of ophthalmology both in Australia and internationally.
