Dr Tony Rafter

Dr Tony Rafter is a highly skilled and experienced Cardiologist based in Taringa, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. With a strong background in pharmacy, Dr Rafter obtained his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Queensland in 1981. Following this, he pursued his passion for medicine and graduated with first-class honors from the University of Queensland in 1990, earning his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Hons) qualification.

Dr Rafter underwent advanced cardiology training at prestigious hospitals such as the Princess Alexandra and the Prince Charles Hospitals in Brisbane. In 1997, he was admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, solidifying his reputation as a respected professional in his field. To further hone his skills and knowledge, Dr Rafter completed a two-year fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Royal Perth Hospital, during which he played a vital role in the development of intracoronary brachytherapy.

Currently, Dr Rafter serves as the Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories at The Wesley Hospital. He is widely recognized for his expertise in interventional cardiology, specifically in the field of invasive assessment of functional ischemia and intravascular imaging. Dr Rafter remains an active member of the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and Structural Heart Team, contributing to advancements in the field.

In addition to his comprehensive consultation services at The Wesley Hospital and Clayfield locations, Dr Rafter also regularly visits Gladstone to provide outreach clinics. His commitment to patient care and dedication to advancing the field of cardiology have earned him numerous accolades, including the Boldery, Fielding, Rafter, Pascoe, and Scalia Award for his research on nutritional deficiency of selenium secondary to weight loss (bariatric) surgery associated with life-threatening cardiomyopathy.
