Dr Stuart Butterly

Dr. Stuart Butterly is an experienced Interventional Cardiologist and Structural Heart Specialist, currently practicing with Heart HQ in various locations, including Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital in Birtinya, Tewantin, Sippy Downs, and Gympie. His primary focus is complex coronary artery disease and structural heart disease intervention.

Dr. Butterly has undergone extensive training in advanced procedures such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVR), and Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC), making him a leading expert in these specialised areas. He is also a registered CT coronary angiogram specialist.

Having completed his cardiology training at the prestigious Princess Alexandra Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospitals in Brisbane, Dr. Butterly furthered his expertise through interventional cardiology fellowship training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Western Australia. During this time, he gained invaluable experience in the performance of complex cardiac interventions, advanced multimodal coronary imaging, structural heart and valve intervention, as well as innovative invasive therapies for resistant hypertension. He also gained expertise in early structural heart interventions for aortic valve stenosis and mitral valve regurgitation.

Dr. Butterly is known for his adoption of minimally invasive techniques, particularly in performing coronary angiography and interventions predominantly through the distal radial artery at the base of the thumb. This rare skill sets him apart as one of only a few specialists in Australia who can offer this approach. In addition to his structural heart treatments, he has a special interest in utilizing state-of-the-art techniques and equipment to address complicated coronary artery disease that was once considered untreatable.

Alongside his clinical expertise, Dr. Butterly displays a passion for research and has contributed to numerous papers published in Australian and international medical journals.
