Dr Peter Larsen is a renowned Clinical and Interventional Cardiologist based in Tewantin, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. He specialises in interventional cardiac procedures, structural heart interventions, and endovascular surgeries. Dr Larsen is also a registered specialist in CT Coronary Angiography.
After graduating with Honours from the University of Queensland, Dr Larsen began his medical career as an Intern and Resident Medical Officer at Nambour General Hospital (NGH) on the Sunshine Coast. It was during this time that he developed a deep interest in Cardiology while working in the Coronary Care Unit. He went on to complete his Physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and pursued further specialization in Cardiology through Advanced Training and a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at The Prince Charles Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
Dr Larsen furthered his expertise by completing a two-year clinical and research Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Diagnosis and Intervention at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. During this time, he gained extensive experience in high-volume interventional procedures, complex vascular interventions, and acute emergency cases, such as primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) for emergency heart attacks. His focus was on trans-radial access. Dr Larsen also conducted research in trans-radial access for acute PCI.
In 2010, Dr Larsen returned to the Sunshine Coast as the inaugural Director of Cardiology for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Cardiology at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Dr Larsen played a pivotal role in establishing the Cardiac Catheterisation Labs at NGH and setting up the 24/7, 365-day acute heart attack service on the Sunshine Coast. He is a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ) and holds post-graduate certification in Peripheral Endovascular Therapy with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, as well as Cardiac CT Angiography with the Royal Australian College of Radiologists.
Dr Larsen's vision has always been to collaborate with his specialist colleagues in creating a world-class "Heart Team" that delivers comprehensive care to patients with cardiac conditions on the Sunshine Coast. He is one of the founding Directors of Sunshine Coast Heart Specialists (now Heart HQ), and his vast contributions to the medical field are sure to benefit numerous patients.
