Dr Stephen Byrne is a highly experienced neurosurgeon and complex spine surgeon who recently established Sunshine Coast Neurosurgery. After studying at the University of Aberdeen, the oldest English-speaking Medical School in the Western World, Dr Byrne completed his neurosurgical training in Melbourne, Adelaide, and New Zealand before becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He specialises in using both minimally invasive and open surgical techniques to treat degenerative, traumatic, neoplastic, and infectious problems that affect the spine.
To further advance his knowledge, Dr Byrne partnered with the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle to undertake a combined neurosurgical and orthopaedic complex spinal surgery Fellowship, where he became proficient in reconstructive and decompressive techniques. Additionally, he mastered minimally invasive and specialized ‘keyhole’ techniques that he uses in appropriate cases.
Apart from spinal surgeries, Dr Byrne has ample experience in cranial neurosurgery, including managing patients with brain tumors, pituitary tumors, hydrocephalus, Chiari malformations, and peripheral nerve compression. As a result, he is well-versed in treating diverse neurological issues.
Dr Byrne holds membership in several professional societies, including the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, North American Spine Society, Spine Society of Australia, and Congress of Neurological Surgeons. His achievements in the field of medicine position him as one of the leading neurosurgeons and complex spine surgeons in the field, whose expertise spans a myriad of neurological complications.
