Dr Richard Thompson

Dr. Richard Thompson is a highly experienced paediatric surgeon who has a wealth of expertise in treating a broad range of surgical conditions in children. He holds Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh, and Australasia, and is based at the Gold Coast University Hospital, where he provides specialist surgical care for children.

Dr. Thompson trained in the UK, where he developed a particular interest in managing children with gastrointestinal and colorectal disease during his ten-year consultancy at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. He passed the Intercollegiate Examination in Paediatric Surgery in 2005 and was Clinical Lead for Children’s Surgery in Aberdeen from 2011 to 2014.

Since moving to the Gold Coast in 2015, Dr. Thompson has been instrumental in providing families with local access to comprehensive paediatric surgery services. He has expertise in both minimally invasive and open surgical techniques, and is able to apply a wide range of treatment options for the surgical management of abdominal and thoracic disease in children. He also provides training and education for surgical trainees and regularly lectures undergraduates from Bond and Griffith Universities.
