He subsequently trained under the renowned spinal surgeon John Webb in Nottingham, England, and has been granted Fellowships by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (Orthopaedics) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. In addition to his private practice, Dr Licina is actively involved in research and education. He played a crucial role in establishing the AO Spine Centre of Excellence in Brisbane and is a valued member of the QUT Orthopaedic and Trauma Research Group. He has also established the Brisbane Private Hospital Research Group. Dr Licina has published numerous papers, presented at international spine courses and conferences, and contributed to groundbreaking research on spinal cord injuries. Notably, he was part of the team that performed the world's first transplant of specialized olfactory cells into the spinal cord of a paralyzed patient, aiming to develop techniques for spinal cord recovery. Dr Licina is one of the founders of BackSpace, a new facility at Brisbane Private Hospital offering multidisciplinary, medically supervised treatments for back pain and post-surgery rehabilitation. His current research interests include computer-assisted image-guided surgery and minimally invasive spinal surgery, including bone graft alternatives. For his significant contributions to the field, he has been granted the title of Adjunct Professor by the Queensland University of Technology.
