Notably, he was part of the team that performed the world's first transplant of specialized olfactory cells into the spinal cord of a paralyzed patient, aiming to develop techniques for spinal cord recovery. Dr Licina is one of the founders of BackSpace, a new facility at Brisbane Private Hospital offering multidisciplinary, medically supervised treatments for back pain and post-surgery rehabilitation. His current research interests include computer-assisted image-guided surgery and minimally invasive spinal surgery, including bone graft alternatives. For his significant contributions to the field, he has been granted the title of Adjunct Professor by the Queensland University of Technology.
