Dr Brent McMonagle is an accomplished ear and skull-base surgeon from the Gold Coast, Australia. After completing his medical degree at the University of Queensland in 1996, he went on to receive his surgical fellowship in 2004, with further training in otology, neurotology, skullbase surgery, and advanced sinus surgery in 2005/2006 across Sydney, London, and Adelaide. Currently, he is the only sub-specialist in ear and skull-base surgery between Brisbane and Newcastle, performing almost all ear surgeries at Gold Coast University Hospital.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr McMonagle is an active educator and researcher. He supervises clinical training of ENT surgery at Gold Coast University Hospital and lectures medical students at Bond and Griffith Universities. He has also completed a PhD under Professor Alan Mackay-Sim, investigating Olfactory Ensheathing Cells and Stem Cells in Nerve Repair and Regeneration to develop alternative methods of peripheral nerve repair.
Dr McMonagle is the scientific director of the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation, which aims to cure paralysis for all and has raised money to support four PhD projects so far. He is part of the Menzies Health Institute team led by Dr James St John, with funding of $5 million to develop new techniques for a future human trial of olfactory cell transplants in spinal cord injured patients. His clinical research interests include otitis media, and he has presented both nationally and internationally and contributed to several articles and chapters on basic science and clinical research.
