St Georges Basin is a township in the South Coast region of New South Wales, in Australia. It is located on the shores of St Georges Basin, a large shallow lagoon that runs 12 kilometres long and has a tree-covered shoreline. The township is neighboured by the following localities: Tomerong, Basin view, St. Georges Bush, Worrowing Heights, Old Erowal Bay, and Sanctuary Point. As of the 2016 census, the population of St Georges Basin was 45,117.

History of St Georges Basin The Dhurga Aborigines formerly inhabited the St Georges Basin township. These people used to refer to the St Georges Basin as “Bherwheree”. The township was given its current name by Thomas Florence, a European surveyor, on 29 November 1827. At the time, Florence was tracing from Jervis Bay to Conjola. A highway connecting St Georges Basin to the surrounding villages was built in the 1840s. This highway was initially used for taking wool, wheat, hides, etc., from the Braidwood, Goulburn and Canberra areas to the coast for shipping to Sydney.
