Muswellbrook is located around 243km on the northern side of Sydney. This prosperous town lies around 127 km on the north-western side of Newcastle. This area was primarily known for its horse breeding and coal mining activities. However, it has been quite famous in recent times for its wine production and gourmet food. History of Muswellbrook Before the Europeans came to the region, the city was occupied by Gamilaroi and Wonnarua people. In 1819, Chief Constable John Howe occupied Muswellbrook as the first settlers. On 23rd October 1833, Muswellbrook was gazetted. The sons of Francis Forbes established the town in 1842. The town was named Muswellbrook in 1848 to remove confusion with the neighbouring Forbestown.
