History of Lithgow The area received its name after William Lithgow, the state's first Auditor-General. John Oxley gave the title to the mountain on which the town lies: Lithgow's Valley. Lithgow is an essential centre of a coal mining district having only one coal-driven power station nearby. Iron smelting began in 1848 in Mittagong. The only iron that was being cast in Lithgow was by William Sandford.
