History of Batemans Bay The land surrounding Batemans Bay traditionally belonged to the Indigenous Australian Yuin group of the Walbunja clan. Dhurga is the traditional language spoken initially by the Walbunja people. Captain James Cook, a European explorer, first spotted and named the bay on 22 April 1770.
