Located in Northern Tablelands, Armidale is the administrative centre of Northern Tablelands. As per the census of June 2018, the city had a population of 24,504. It is situated halfway between Brisbane and Sydney, right at the junction of Waterfall Way and New England Highway. History of Armidale Long before the British came to the region, Anewan people occupied this area. In the 1830s, the British pastoralists entered the region after John Oxley had explored the area. John had explored the city and recommended it for grazing. Armidale was founded in 1839 and was named after Armadale. Today, several heritage-listed sites in the region include Armidale railway station turntable and Armidale Post Office.
