Dr Shanta Velaiutham

Dr. Shanta Velaiutham is a highly experienced consultant general surgeon specialising in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast cancer surgery. With over 23 years of surgical experience, she has served in Malaysia, Australia, and Scotland, offering compassionate care and empathy to her patients. She currently serves as a lead surgeon at BreastScreen NSW, consultant surgeon at The Breast Centre, and VMO surgeon at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and Calvary Mater Hospital.

Shanta graduated top of her class in her MBBS (Hons) and Master of Surgery degrees at the University of Malaya before gaining a Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2012. She also received a Graduate Diploma in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery from the University of East Anglia, UK, in 2018, and is a member of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Apart from her professional work, Shanta is passionate about global aid work, and has volunteered her services to Halilulik Hospital in West Timor and Australian Doctors International in Papua New Guinea. Recently, she became a member of the Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare.

In addition to oncoplastic and reconstructive breast cancer surgery, Shanta also practices general surgical services, including treatment for gallbladder disease and hernia surgery. She is an active member of the Breast Surgery International (BSI/ISS), Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BreastSurgANZ), and Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG). She participates in the BreastSurgANZ Quality Audit, which aims to improve surgical care for breast cancer patients in Australia and New Zealand, and contributes data to the Australian Breast Device Registry for all implant reconstruction cases.
