Dr Fiona Abell

Dr. Abell obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 1986. In 1993, she completed her specialist training in medical oncology and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). To further enhance her skills, Dr. Abell completed a clinical oncology fellowship at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York, USA. Additionally, she obtained a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Newcastle in 2001.

With over three decades of experience in the field, Dr. Abell has worked at various prestigious institutions across New South Wales and in other states. From 1995 to 2002, she served as a staff medical oncologist at St George Hospital in Sydney. Since returning to her hometown of Newcastle in 2002, she has been a senior staff specialist in the department of medical oncology at Calvary Mater Newcastle. Additionally, Dr. Abell consults privately at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital on a weekly basis.

Aside from her clinical practice, Dr. Abell is dedicated to teaching and education. She has a keen interest in undergraduate clinical teaching and has contributed significantly to the medical student oncology teaching program at the University of Newcastle. Furthermore, she has been actively involved in various professional groups and committees throughout her career. Dr. Abell was an esteemed member of the ALP Lung Cancer Consultative group from 2000 to 2006 and chaired the Area Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary team from 2003 to 2007. To stay updated with the latest advancements in oncology, she remains an active member of national clinical trials groups such as the ALTG and ANZBCTG.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Abell enjoys pursuing various interests. She finds joy in home renovation projects, exploring new travel destinations, and immersing herself in the arts. Appreciating the finer things in life, she indulges in good wine, particularly a McLaren Vale red. In her leisure time, she likes to play golf and further her conversational skills in French. Dr. Abell is accompanied by her beloved dog, Georgie, who keeps her engaged and entertained.
