Dr Ruth Hardstaff

Dr. Hardstaff received her medical degree from Newcastle upon Tyne Medical School in the UK in 1994. She completed her internship and basic surgical training in the North East of England, with a year-long stint in Queensland, Australia, as a Registrar in Intensive Care, Urology, and General Surgery. Dr. Hardstaff then pursued a two-year research fellowship with the transplant unit at the Freeman Road Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, earning an MD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

She went on to undertake higher surgical training in the South East of Scotland, where she gained exposure to General, Colorectal, Upper GI, Vascular, Hepatobiliary, and Transplant Surgery. Upon obtaining FRCS in General Surgery and Transplantation, she completed fellowships in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, and in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multiorgan Transplantation at Freeman Road Hospital.

Dr. Hardstaff moved to Darwin, Australia, in 2011 to assume a Consultant post in General Surgery, during which time she set up an organ retrieval service for transplantation. In 2014, she was awarded FRACS. Dr. Hardstaff joined John Hunter Hospital in October 2017 in Renal Transplantation and General Surgery. She is also involved in the organ retrieval service for New South Wales.

Dr. Hardstaff brings expertise in Gastrointestinal surgical disorders, Vascular access, Peritoneal dialysis, Gallbladder disease, hernia surgery, and upper and lower GI endoscopy to her practice and is happy to consult on these matters.
