Dr Westera is a Queensland-born urologist who completed his medical degree at James Cook University. He developed an early interest in minimally invasive and robotic surgery during his urology speciality training in Queensland. Dr Westera went on to complete a robotic and laparoscopic fellowship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queensland Robotic Surgery Unit at Greenslopes Hospital. He pursued further training and completed an ERUS-accredited fellowship at the Bristol Urological Institute in the United Kingdom in Uro-oncology and Robotic surgery.
Dr Westera is one of few urologists in Queensland who can perform minimally invasive/Robotic surgery for most urological cancers including radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, radical nephroureterectomy, and radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion. He worked as a consultant Urologist and Robotic Surgeon at the prestigious Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and The Wesley Hospital before moving to the Gold Coast/Northern NSW region to offer a high-quality urology service. Dr Westera is also a Visiting Medical Officer at the Tweed and Murwillumbah Hospitals where he mentors the next generation of urologists and junior doctors.
Dr Westera's areas of interest include Robotic Uro-oncology (cancer surgery), Robotic non-cancer operations, prostate, bladder, renal and testis cancer, adrenal diseases, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and urinary stone disease.
