Dr Brendan McQuillan

Dr Brendan McQuillan is a highly qualified and experienced cardiologist based in Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia. With a strong background in cardiovascular medicine and research, Dr McQuillan is dedicated to providing expert care to his patients.

After completing his undergraduate medical degree (MBBS) at the University of Western Australia, Dr McQuillan gained valuable experience as a junior doctor before pursuing further studies in internal medicine. He then dedicated three years to full-time research at the Heart Research Institute of Western Australia, where he successfully obtained his PhD in vascular biology. His research focused on identifying novel risk factors for atherosclerosis, a condition that affects the arteries and can lead to heart disease.

Following his research endeavors, Dr McQuillan completed advanced training in cardiology and was accepted into the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Eager to expand his expertise, he undertook a position as a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University and underwent two years of subspecialty training in echocardiography at the renowned Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Currently, Dr McQuillan holds the position of Associate Professor in cardiology at The University of Western Australia. In addition, he serves as the head of the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Unit of the School of Medicine and Pharmacology. Within the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr McQuillan functions as a consultant cardiologist and also holds the esteemed position of Director of the Echocardiography Department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Dr McQuillan's professional interests primarily revolve around echocardiography. He is skilled in performing and interpreting transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiograms, as well as exercise stress echocardiograms. Additionally, he has ongoing research interests in genetic epidemiology, inflammatory pathways in atherosclerosis, and the metabolic syndrome.
