History of Wangaratta Thomas Wedge, the colonial surveyor, gave the city its name, naming it after Wangaratta cattle station. The first inhabitants of the region were the Pangerang people. The first European explorers who passed through this area were Hume and Hovell. This was in 1824.

On 1st February 1843, the region's first post office was opened. It was on 15th April 1959 that Wangaratta was proclaimed a city. In 1980, new municipal offices were opened, which later became the headquarters of the city.
