Situated on the eastern side of Latrobe Valley, Traralgon is part of the Gippsland region. As per the census of 2016, the population of the region was 25,485. It is one of the fastest and largest developing cities in the greater Latrobe Valley area. In the early 1860s, the township was established, and on the 1st January 1861, the Post Office opened. The first railway line, which was from Melbourne, was completed in 1877, which paid a significant role in boosting the economy.

Economy of Traralgon The economy of this region is dependent on its primary sector, rich natural resources and secondary sector, which includes fossil-fuel power generation, coal mining and electricity production. Traralgon also benefits from natural gas and oil. The agriculture industry also contributes to the national income of the region. Vegetable growing, dairy products and wool are the thriving sectors. The tertiary sector plays a significant role in employment and income generation.

History of Traralgon Traralgon is located on the traditional lands of Kurnai/Indigenous Gunai. More than 5000 years ago, these people were involved in manufacturing stone tools. Kurnai/Gunai people occupied this Gippsland region for more than 20,000 years. Dr Edmund Hobson, along with Edward Hobson, had purchased land, which they referred to as Traralgon. Much later in 1964, Traralgon was proclaimed a city. In 1873, the mechanic's institute and the old town hall were demolished.
