History of Melton Melton was once a small town before it was declared a satellite suburb. It got its name after Melton Mowbray, which is in the UK. The early settlers in Melton were squatters in the 1830s who brought in sheep in the region and built a small settlement. On 1st March 1856, the first Post office was opened in this region. In the present times, the city includes seven suburban areas, which form one urban area, and Melton is the centre of the region.
