History of Warrnambool The city got its name from Mount Warrnambool, a scoria cone volcano situated around 25 km on the northeastern side of the town. In 11845, William Fowler Pickering was given the task of planning the city, and it was he who chose its name as Warrnambool. With the arrival of Captain Alexander Campbell, British colonization of this land started. Warrnambool was a vital port during the famous Victorian Gold Rush. In 1937, the first Post Offices opened in the region.
