Dr Joel Symonds is a highly skilled and experienced Specialist Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon, practicing at The Strathfield Breast Centre, where he specialises in the treatment of women with breast cancer and benign breast-related conditions, including male patients. Dr Symonds was personally appointed by Professor Hugh Carmalt, to take over his private practice upon his retirement. At his Strathfield clinic, Dr Symonds is fully supported by a team of onsite radiologists, pathologists, and multidisciplinary breast cancer specialists.
Dr Symonds has undergone extensive specialty training in breast surgery, having completed three years of post-fellowship surgical training programs. He completed his two-year Australian post-fellowship training program at Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and Concord Repatriation General Hospital and then proceeded to train in the UK as the Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellow at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Linda McCartney Breast Cancer Centre, for further comprehensive surgical experience in lumpectomy combined with breast reduction, implant-based reconstruction, risk reduction surgery, and lipomodeling.
Dr Symonds received his medical degree from the University of Sydney and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a member of the Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand Society. He also completed additional Graduate Certificate in Surgery (Breast Surgery) from The University of Sydney.
Dr Symonds is passionate about promoting breast cancer screening and breast cancer prevention education. He is also VMO appointed with BreastScreen NSW and up to date with all the latest surgical developments and provides his patients with comprehensive and relevant information. His areas of special interest include breast cancer, genetic mutations, oncoplastic breast surgery techniques, therapeutic mammoplasty (lumpectomy with breast reduction), post-mastectomy implant-based reconstruction, nipple reconstruction, lipomodeling, benign breast conditions, and work-up of imaging abnormalities. Overall, he is committed to providing the highest level of patient care to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients.
