Dr James Laban is a highly respected dual-certified consultant neurosurgeon and spine surgeon with vast experience in state-of-the-art spine, brain, and peripheral nerve surgery. He specialises in using minimally-invasive techniques, robotics and computer-guidance to deliver world-class healthcare. Before his recent move to Sydney, he was the Director of Neurosurgery at St George’s University Hospital, London, one of the world's largest teaching hospitals and neurosurgical centers of excellence.
Dr Laban studied medicine and neuroscience at the world-renowned Imperial College London, where he received the prestigious Wolfson Scholarship and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Honours, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Following his postgraduate studies in neurosurgery at London’s top hospitals, he was awarded the HCA International Foundation and Codman Neurosurgical Scholarships, which he used to further his skills and knowledge at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, in neuro-oncology and spinal surgery.
As Director of Neurosurgery at St George’s University Hospital, London, Dr Laban treated patients with complex neurosurgical conditions from all over the world. He was the educational and clinical governance lead and a member of the Health Education England Neurosurgery Training Committee and the Neurosurgical Specialist Advisory Group. He has received many awards and honors, including appointment as Honorary Professor of Neurosurgery at Cangzhou People’s Hospital, Hebei, China, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Dr Laban is an expert in specialist spinal surgery, neuro-oncological surgery, hydrocephalus, neurovascular and peripheral nerve surgery, among others, and has presented and published nationally and internationally. He is also a qualified ski and tennis instructor, loves logic, and has been honored as one of the first Australians to reach the Magnetic North Pole on foot. Now living and working in Sydney, Dr Laban is a consulting surgeon at North Shore Private Hospital and Dee Why.
