Dr Benedict Mackay

Dr Benedict Mackay is a highly trained and experienced laparoscopic bariatric, upper gastrointestinal, and general surgeon who takes a holistic approach to weight loss surgery. He completed his BSc in Microbiology at the University of Birmingham before obtaining his MBChB at the University of Manchester. His surgical training began in the UK, continued in New Zealand and Australia, and ultimately led to him becoming a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a Member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.

After receiving his FRACS, Dr Mackay pursued a further 2 years of specialist training, including a year with pioneering bariatric surgeon Dr George Hopkins. He also completed the ANZGOSA post-fellowship training scheme and a second post-fellowship year in St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. His training in weight loss surgery included laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery (both Roux en Y and single loop), laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery, complex revisional surgery, and robotic surgery. He also gained expertise in upper gastrointestinal surgery, including benign surgery and gastro-oesophageal cancer re-sectional surgery.

Dr Mackay started his practice, Benedict Mackay (TM), on the Sunshine Coast in 2019, where he also joined Weightloss Solutions Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital. He offers cutting-edge surgical methods and takes a multi-disciplinary approach to improve the overall well-being and life expectancy of his patients. With his extensive training and experience, Dr Mackay is dedicated to providing the highest level of care to all his patients.
