Dr Dinithi Samaratunga

Dr. Samaratunga is an accomplished and skilled medical professional with vast experience in respiratory and sleep medicine. She completed her MBBS in 2005 from the University of Queensland and received her FRACP in 2014, after finishing her general physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. She performed external placements at The Prince Charles Hospital, Redcliffe Hospital, Rockhampton Base Hospital, and had rural placements in Northern and Central Queensland. She also completed a three-year fellowship in respiratory and sleep medicine at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Prince Charles Hospital, acquiring specialized training in complex areas of sleep medicine. She eventually became the Chair of the Sleep Health Innovation Work-Group Metro North Hospitals and is now a Thoracic and Sleep specialist at Greenslopes Private Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Samaratunga’s expertise in respiratory and sleep medicine is diverse, ranging from managing COPD, asthma, lung cancer, to complex interstitial lung diseases. She is skilled in pleural intervention, ultrasound, and bronchoscopy through accredited training and expertise. Her experience also includes managing respiratory muscle weakness in neuromuscular disorders, acute and domiciliary noninvasive ventilation, and disorders of hypersomnolence like narcolepsy. Additionally, she is proficient in managing obstructive sleep apnoea and the occasional complexities with treatment.

Dr. Samaratunga is a lecturer at the University of Queensland and a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and Australasian Sleep Association. She has presented at national meetings on both sleep and respiratory issues. Patients referred to her by the Sleepcare study centers trust her expertise and professionalism in treating their sleep-related disorders.
