Mr Rhys Filgate

Rhys is a skilled and experienced surgeon who specialises in colorectal and general surgery. He provides a holistic approach to his patients and has a special interest in minimally invasive colorectal surgery for both cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. With his sub-specialist interest in recurrent or advanced pelvic cancer, Rhys works closely with the multidisciplinary teams at both Sir Charles Gairdner and Hollywood Private Hospitals to ensure that cancer patients receive the best possible care.

Apart from colorectal surgery, Rhys also manages all aspects of general surgical conditions, including hernias, gallstones, and lipomas. He is trained in proctology and pelvic floor surgery, allowing him to treat complex conditions related to the pelvis.

Rhys completed his MBBS with first-class honours from the University of Tasmania in 2007 and moved to Western Australia in 2010 to complete his general surgical training. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in early 2015. To further his expertise in colorectal surgery, he was accepted into the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand post-fellowship training program. He completed two years of post-fellowship training, with the first year at The Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, where he focused on laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. His second year was spent at North Shore Hospital, Auckland, a high-volume tertiary colorectal center where he specialized in recurrent and locally advanced rectal cancer and pelvic floor conditions.

Rhys maintains his commitment to the public hospital system by working in clinical and teaching roles at Sir Charles Gairdner and Osborne Park Hospitals. He also provides general surgical cover to King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. Previously a member of the Western Australian Board in General Surgery with responsibility for registrar training, Rhys is dedicated to advancing the surgical field and providing the best possible care to his patients.
