Professor Arlene Chan is a highly acclaimed Medical Oncologist with a distinguished career spanning over two decades. She has been at the forefront of breast cancer research and is specifically interested in identifying the biological factors responsible for therapeutic response in breast cancer, developing data collection systems for clinical research, and enhancing symptomatic care for early and advanced breast cancer patients.
Professor Chan holds an adjunct professorship at the Curtin University School of Medicine and is the Director of the Breast Clinical Trials Unit at Hollywood Private Hospital. She is also the Vice-Chair of Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA. Her career in Oncology began in 1999, and she has since worked towards advancing breast cancer research in Australia and beyond.
Professor Chan received her fellowship in Medical Oncology from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and subsequently obtained a Master of Medicine in Palliative Care from the University of Melbourne. She also received a Fellowship in Breast Cancer and Cancer Genetics from Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
Throughout her illustrious career, Professor Chan has been actively involved in breast cancer research, with more than 110 breast cancer trials under her supervision. She advises several pharmaceutical companies on breast cancer treatments and has authored over 200 publications. Her contributions to the field have been recognised nationally and internationally, with more than 170 invitations to speak at conferences worldwide.
Professor Chan’s dedication to breast cancer research has been honoured with several accolades. She received the Western Australian of the Year award in the Professions Division in 2016, was a finalist in the Australian of the Year Awards in 2017 and was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2018 for her contribution to medicine. Professor Chan's contributions to medicine are immeasurable, and she continues to be a leading figure in breast cancer research in Australia.
