Dr Patrick Walsh is an exceptionally skilled gastroenterologist based in Chermside, Brisbane. He obtained his medical qualifications, including a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) from Otago University in New Zealand. Dr Walsh is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and has been practising medicine since 2006.
With a particular interest in gastroenterology, Dr Walsh has developed expertise in various areas, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colonoscopy. He is particularly interested in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, inflammatory bowel diseases, endoscopic ultrasound, and gastrointestinal oncology.
Dr Walsh's professional journey led him to the United States in 2005, where he completed a prestigious Endoscopic Ultrasound Fellowship. He then secured a staff position at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre and held it for six months before returning to Australia the following year. Returning to his home country, Dr Walsh began working at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, providing his expertise in endoscopic ultrasound and advanced endoscopy.
In 2006, Dr Walsh co-founded Digestive Diseases Queensland, a private practice that offers comprehensive consultation services in general gastroenterology as well as specialised areas such as endoscopic ultrasound, bariatric endoscopy, and therapeutic endoscopy. Throughout his career, Dr Walsh has developed a particular interest in the complex post-operative management of surgical leaks, notably in the bariatric population.
Dr Walsh's commitment to advancing medical technology can be seen in his achievement as the first surgeon in Australia to utilise the Overstitch procedure. Since December 2015, he has used this innovative technique both to perform revisions for post-operative patients and endoscopic sleeves. His expertise has gained recognition, and he is frequently invited to speak in surgical forums, where he highlights the emerging role of endoscopy in the bariatric population.
