A/Prof David Hewett

A/Prof David Hewett is an accomplished gastroenterologist, therapeutic colonoscopist, and health services researcher who has made significant contributions to the field of medicine. Currently serving as an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland School of Medicine, he consults at Herston Health and performs endoscopies at Brisbane Private Hospital.

Dr. Hewett obtained his MBBS with honours from the University of Queensland and furthered his training in clinical and research at the RBWH. He went on to complete his post-doctoral studies at Indiana University in the USA, where he developed advanced skills in colonoscopy technical performance, including the resection of large colorectal polyps.

With a focus on clinical research, Dr. Hewett works towards improving the effectiveness of colonoscopy for bowel cancer screening. He has published extensively on new colonoscopic techniques and methods to enhance physician performance. His research interests also include health systems research, medical education, quality of patient care, intergroup relations, and procedural skills training.

Dr. Hewett actively participates in national colorectal cancer policy and training initiatives. He serves on national advisory boards for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program and Lynch Syndrome Australia. Additionally, he has held the position of Director of Training for the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and has been a member of the Specialist Training Committee in Gastroenterology with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Through his accomplishments, Dr. Hewett has played a pivotal role in advancing medical research and developing new techniques for colonoscopies. He remains a valued member of the healthcare community, contributing to the improvement of patient care and medical education.
