Prof Niall Tebbutt

Associate Professor Niall Tebbutt is a well-respected Consultant Medical Oncologist specialising in gastrointestinal (GI) tract cancers. He currently holds the position of Director of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness and Research Centre, where he leads a team of professionals in providing expert care to cancer patients. Additionally, he consults privately at the Darebin Street Specialist Centre in Heidelberg, Melbourne.

A/Prof Tebbutt's extensive experience in managing patients with cancer started after he completed his medical training at Oxford University in 1989. He then relocated to Australia in 1993, where he has since worked in various hospitals in Melbourne, gaining valuable knowledge and expertise in the field of oncology. Furthermore, he was able to acquire additional clinical research experience in gastrointestinal cancer at the renowned Royal Marsden Hospital in the UK.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the medical field, A/Prof Tebbutt was awarded a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2002. His research focused on genetic studies in gastrointestinal cancer and was highly regarded by the medical community, leading to his commendation for the Premier's Award for Medical Research. A/Prof Tebbutt has co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has been appointed Associate Professor by the University of Melbourne in 2009.

A/Prof Tebbutt's dedication to advancing medical research is evident through his involvement in numerous organizations. In 2009, he was elected to the Scientific Advisory Committee and Board of Directors of the Australasian GI Trials Group (AGITG). He currently chairs the lower GI working party within the AGITG and serves as its Deputy Chair and Treasurer. A/Prof Tebbutt is actively engaged in fundraising for GI cancer research and has undertaken high altitude mountain climbs to support this cause. He successfully led expeditions to Mt Kilimanjaro in 2015 and Mt Aconcagua in 2018, showing his commitment to making a difference. In 2020, he plans to lead another climb to Mt Himlung in Western Nepal.
