Dr Nathan Schaefer

Nathan is a highly accomplished doctor and surgeon based in Queensland, Australia. After completing a Bachelor of Exercise Science at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, he was awarded the Exercise Science Medal for his exceptional academic performance. Nathan then pursued further studies and earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Griffith University as well, where he was the recipient of the University Medal for graduating with First Class Honours. During his seven years of study, he was consistently awarded the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence, which is a testament to his academic prowess. Since becoming a doctor in 2012, Nathan has been working in the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, where he has made significant contributions. He was elected to the Australian Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for three consecutive years, representing his fellow trainees in Australia and New Zealand. Nathan is also an accomplished researcher with fourteen research papers published and numerous presentations given both domestically and internationally. Nathan is very passionate about skin cancer, a cause he has been actively supporting through his charity work. In 2016, he and a group of friends formed the charity 'Million Metres for Melanoma' and broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest team to row one million metres on an indoor rowing machine, raising $132,000 for melanoma research. In 2018, Nathan and his team broke another Guinness World Record for the fastest team to run one million metres on a treadmill, raising an impressive $300,000. This money was donated to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to build a new melanoma unit. Nathan continues to fundraise for melanoma research and has plans for his next world record attempt later this year. Aside from his charity work, Nathan also works as a Staff Specialist at Princess Alexandra Hospital. His primary focus is skin cancer surgery and complex head and neck cancer reconstruction. Nathan is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). He is also a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University and the University of Queensland, where he shares his knowledge and expertise with the next generation of doctors and surgeons.
