A/Prof Michael Reid is an Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Cairns, Australia. With sub-specialist interests in knee, hip, sports injuries, and trauma, he works with Cairns Private Hospital and operates his private consulting rooms called OSSEM (Orthopaedic Surgery Sport & Exercise Medicine). Michael earned his medical degree from the University of Aberdeen in 1999 and won the Thomas Lauder Carr Prize in Orthopaedics. After completing his higher research degree in London, he finished specialist Orthopaedic training in the South East Thames region of the UK.
Furthering his expertise in lower limb and shoulder arthroscopy, sports injuries, musculoskeletal cancer surgery, and trauma surgery, Michael completed two years of fellowship in Perth, Western Australia and Chelsea & Westminster in the UK. He became a Consultant at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Center Exeter in 2014, before moving to Cairns later that year to join the local community with his family.
Michael holds the position of Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at James Cook University, where he teaches and conducts research to advance orthopaedic surgery in Far North Queensland. His work focuses on improving postoperative outcomes for his patients by facilitating a quicker return to normal activities and sports.
In addition to his clinical work, Michael has presented papers at scientific conferences both locally and internationally and has been an invited speaker at international meetings. He has provided care to elite athletes such as the Fremantle Dockers, Cairns Taipans, and English Rugby team. Michael's dedication to the field of orthopaedic surgery is evident through his extensive professional affiliations, including memberships with the Australian Orthopaedic Association, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, British Association for Surgery of the Knee, British Orthopaedic Association, Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Faculty of Surgical Trainers, and Faculty on AO Trauma.
