Dr Mark Boccola

Dr Mark Boccola is a highly skilled Bariatric and Upper GI surgeon who is dedicated to achieving the best outcomes for his patients. Originally from Newcastle, NSW, Dr Boccola completed his medical degree at the University of Newcastle in 2006 before undertaking general surgery training in Victoria. He became a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2015.

Dr Boccola has completed two years of post-fellowship training, specialising in gastro-oesophageal cancer resection and hiatal hernia repair through the ANZ Gastro-Oesophageal Surgical Association (ANZGOSA) at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle. He has advanced laparoscopic skills and is recognized by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE) to perform therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy.

Dr Boccola has also spent additional post-fellowship time at Box Hill Hospital, Victoria where he worked with Mr Harry Frydenberg, past president of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), and his accredited ANZ Metabolic & Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS) program. Dr Boccola has published journal articles on a wide range of surgical topics including oncological resection, reconstruction, and anastomotic leak. His recent findings on the pathophysiology of GORD in the lung transplant recipient have been presented to the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) in Houston, Texas.

Dr Boccola's special interests include Bariatric surgery, Anti-reflux surgery, and Gallstone surgery. He is a current member of General Surgeons Australia (GSA) and maintains his scope of general surgical practice. Dr Boccola upholds his strong belief in ongoing post-operative support and dedicates himself to his patients' ongoing well-being.
