Dr Kiran Sheikh's profile

Dr Kiran Sheikh is a general paediatrician with a special interest in developmental paediatrics. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a Member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK). Dr Sheikh provides holistic care to babies and children of all ages for a broad range of general medical and developmental conditions.

Throughout her training, Dr Sheikh gained valuable experience at tertiary care centres, including the former Royal Children's Hospital, the Mater Children's Hospital, and the Queensland Children's Hospital. This exposure allowed her to develop a thorough understanding of managing complex paediatric presentations. Specifically, working in the departments of child development, child neurology, and psychiatry at Queensland Children's Hospital provided her with expertise in the management of neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Furthermore, Dr Sheikh completed advanced training in infant (0-3) mental health through the Mindful Institute of the University of Melbourne. This training equips her with the knowledge to help families maximize the developmental potential of young children by identifying and managing developmental risk factors, as well as fostering nurturing relationships within the family. Additionally, this training enables her to identify the potential origins of behavioural and developmental disorders in older children, devising holistic management plans in collaboration with families.

Dr Sheikh has also completed training in Touchpoints in the Context of Developmental Challenges through the Brazelton Institute of Boston’s Children’s Hospital in the USA. This evidence-based approach allows her to understand challenging behaviours and confusing behaviours in children at various stages of development. By actively listening to families, she can collectively solve issues related to child development and child-family relationships.

In addition, Dr Sheikh has completed training in Newborn Behavioural Observation (NBO) through the Brazelton Institute of Boston’s Children’s Hospital, USA. Administering NBO in her office helps parents understand the behaviours of newborn babies, highlighting their strengths and challenges while enhancing bonding.

Dr Sheikh is a registered facilitator of the Circle of Security Parenting program, an early intervention program designed to enhance secure attachment between children and their parents or caregivers.

Passionate about teaching, Dr Sheikh is a national instructor for Advanced Paediatric Life Support. Her experience as a mother of three children allows her to relate to the challenges of parenting. With a bubbly personality, she easily connects with children.

Dr Sheikh has travelled extensively and is fluent in multiple languages. Having lived in various parts of the world, she understands and respects the diverse cultural backgrounds of her patients.

Outside of work, Dr Sheikh enjoys reading, writing, sketching, painting, cooking, crafting, baking, singing, dancing, and riding her bike. She cherishes the time spent with her lovely family.
