Prof Howard Lau

Conjoint Professor Dr Lau is a highly regarded Urologist in Australia, with a particular expertise in minimally invasive surgical procedures including laparoscopic and robotic treatments for kidney and prostate conditions, particularly in oncology. His contributions to the development of laparoscopic kidney surgery in Australia are significant, having undertaken the first laparoscopic radical nephrectomy in 1998 followed by laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for localised renal cancer in 2002. In 2013, he performed the first partial robotic nephrectomy with Firefly. Dr Lau is frequently invited to demonstrate surgeries and lecture at conferences and workshops throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. His expertise is also recognized by his invitation to co-author surgical textbooks. His research in renal surgery has greatly influenced the practices of many Urologists in both Australia and overseas. Dr Lau’s qualifications include a degree from Sydney University and completion of his urological training at Westmead Hospital in Sydney. He was appointed Clinical Lecturer at the Oxford Transplant Centre in 1995 and has since become a Senior Urologist at Westmead Hospital. At present, he also holds positions at the Westmead Private Hospital, Castle Hill Hospital, and Macquarie University Hospital. His other areas of expertise lie in renal, adrenal, and prostate (RAP) surgery, encompassing the diagnosis and treatment of both benign and malignant conditions. As a result of his vast surgical skills and contributions to the field, Dr Lau is considered one of Australia’s leading Urologists in minimally invasive oncology surgery.
