Dr David Kumagaya

Dr David Kumagaya is a consultant psychiatrist and psychogeriatrician with extensive experience in both public and private psychiatric sectors in Australia. His primary clinic is located in Burwood, Sydney, New South Wales.

Dr Kumagaya obtained his Bachelor of Medicine (BMed) degree and went on to complete a Graduate Certificate of Applied Mental Health Studies (GCAMHS) and a Master of Psychiatric Medicine (MPM). He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and holds a Certificate of Advanced Training in Old Age Psychiatry (Cert. Old Age Psych.).

With a special interest in psychogeriatrics and geriatric psychiatry, Dr Kumagaya provides outpatient assessment and treatment for a range of mental health conditions in the elderly, including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, personality disorders, and cognitive disorders.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Kumagaya is actively engaged in psychiatric research. He has published articles on the topic of electroconvulsive therapy in the elderly. His contributions have been recognized through various awards including the Mental Health Education and Research Fund Award in 2017, the Health Education and Training Institute Older People’s Mental Health Scholarship in 2019, and the Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age Psychiatric Trainee Prize for Scholarly Project in 2020.

Dr Kumagaya is fluent in Japanese and offers telehealth services to facilitate communication with non-English speaking patients. He is experienced in working with doctors, psychiatrists, medical students, individuals with physical disabilities, and families. Dr Kumagaya also provides services such as civil medicolegal opinions and reports, after-hours appointments, home visits, and has experience working with interpreters.
