In 1999, he transitioned to the University of Cologne as a consultant psychiatrist, where he continued his clinical practice in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry while also engaging in research and teaching. In 2004, he was granted “venia legendi,” allowing him to teach as a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In 2009, he was appointed full professor at Heidelberg University and the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) in Mannheim, where he served as Associate Clinical Director of the Department of Psychiatry and led the Centre of Excellence in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Research. In 2016, he completed a Master of Arts in Healthcare Business Management and Health Economics at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. Since 2017, Professor Leweke has been a Professor and Chair at the University of Sydney and a Consultant Psychiatrist at Sydney Local Health District. In 2019, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. His clinical expertise focuses on early mental health disorders, including affective disorders, anxiety, and psychosis, as well as trauma-related conditions and disorders of emotional regulation and attention. He is committed to an integrative approach to mental health and emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnostic procedures. Professor Leweke has been recognized with multiple awards, including the 2015 DGPPN Prize for Pharmacological Research from the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Psychosomatics for his contributions to cannabinoid research. He is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP).
