Dr Brian Gutkin

Dr Brian Gutkin is a psychiatrist based in St Leonards, Sydney, New South Wales. With over 40 years of experience, Dr Gutkin specializes in psychotherapy, primarily focusing on the treatment of complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, anxiety states, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and depression.

Dr Gutkin obtained his MBBCH degree from Trinity College Dublin Medical School. He also holds an Advanced Diploma in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy Sydney. As a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, he is recognized for his expertise in the field.

With a strong interest in mindfulness and meditation therapies, Dr Gutkin is a former president of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Buddhist Counsellors and Psychotherapists. He also serves as a faculty member of their professional training course for therapists.

Throughout his career, Dr Gutkin has gained extensive experience in treating general mental health issues, particularly complex trauma and addiction. He served as the Director of Psychiatry at South Pacific Private Hospital for over 16 years, where he focused on addiction treatment as well as complex trauma and PTSD.

Dr Gutkin's approach integrates various therapeutic modalities, including psychodynamic psychotherapy and acceptance and commitment therapy. He believes in providing individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique needs. Dr Gutkin is also trained to judiciously use medication to support the psychotherapeutic process if required.

Dr Gutkin offers both telehealth and in-person consultations. His services range from professional supervision to weekly psychotherapy sessions. He specializes in working with adults aged 18 to 60 and individuals in the senior age group.
