Dr Anthony Cheng

Dr Anthony Cheng holds over 20 years of experience in General and Bariatric Surgery. He is highly skilled in performing laparoscopic surgeries, including procedures such as gallbladder surgery, hiatal hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, ventral and groin hernia repairs. He is one of the leading experts in Brisbane offering laparoscopic cholecystectomy and exploration of common bile duct, a complex one-staged key-hole procedure that not many surgeons specialize in. This procedure removes gallstones from both the gallbladder and common bile duct, eliminating the need for additional procedures to treat residual gallstones disease.

His area of special expertise lies in Bariatric surgery, offering the full range of surgical options that include laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, minigastric bypass, and robotic bariatric procedures. He has performed the first total robotic sleeve gastrectomy and roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Queensland and is also experienced in providing endoscopic treatments to bariatric patients.

Dr Cheng has an invaluable background in managing Lapband complications and complex revision bariatric procedures as he acknowledges the growing problems related to Lapband implants in the community.

Dr Cheng is a Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) accredited endoscopist skilled in gastroscopy and colonoscopy. He has an open access endoscopy list in Sunnybank Private Hospital for eligible referrals from General Practitioners.

Dr Cheng is a Senior Lecturer of the University of Queensland and an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He underwent extensive surgical training in Melbourne, qualifying as a General Surgeon in 2010, and completed post-fellowship training in Hepatobiliary and Bariatric surgery. His training included an overseas scholarship in the UK at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and an Advanced Laparoscopic Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Dr Cheng is fluent in English, Mandarin & Cantonese and consults and operates at Sunnybank Private Hospital with additional consulting sessions at Mater Medical Centre.
