Professor Leweke completed his medical studies at the University of Cologne, Germany, and the University of New South Wales, earning his medical degree in 1991 and a doctorate in 1993, both from the University of Cologne. He then pursued neurology training at the Alfried-Krupp Hospital in Essen and the Department of Epileptology at Bonn University, Germany, followed by specialization in psychiatry and psychotherapy at Hannover Medical School. He is board-certified in psychiatry, psychotherapy, and neurology by the German State Medical Boards. In 1997, Professor Leweke was appointed Deputy Head of the Department of Addiction at Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany. Two years later, he joined the University of Cologne as a consultant psychiatrist, where he continued his work in both inpatient and outpatient settings, while also engaging in research and teaching. In 2004, he was granted “venia legendi,” authorizing him to teach as a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In 2009, he accepted a full professorship at Heidelberg University and the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) in Mannheim, where he served as Associate Clinical Director of the Department of Psychiatry and led the Centre of Excellence in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Research. In 2016, he completed a Master of Arts in Healthcare Business Management and Health Economics at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences, Cologne. Since 2017, Professor Leweke has held the position of Professor and Chair at the University of Sydney, while also serving as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Sydney Local Health District. In 2019, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. His clinical interests are centered on early mental health disorders, including affective disorders, anxiety, and psychosis, as well as trauma-related conditions and disorders of emotional regulation and attention. He emphasizes an integrative approach to mental health disorders and prioritizes precise diagnostic procedures to ensure accurate diagnoses. Professor Leweke has received several honors, including the 2015 DGPPN Prize for Pharmacological Research from the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Psychosomatics, recognizing his contributions to the cannabinoid research field. He is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP). Additionally, he is a member of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP), the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics (DGPPN), the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS), the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP), and the Schizophrenia International Research Society (SIRS).
