Dr. Burgess is a highly experienced specialist in respiratory and sleep medicine practicing at The Peninsula Respiratory Group on Sydney's northern beaches. With a career spanning more than four decades, he has a wealth of expertise in the control of breathing during sleep and has devoted much of his practice to this area.
Dr. Burgess completed his MBBS at the University of Sydney in 1975, and later obtained his FRACP in 1981, with a focus on Respiratory Medicine. He then pursued a research fellowship in Canada, leading to a Master of Science in Physiology, and joined the medical faculty of the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor. In 1984, he obtained his FRCPC in both Internal Medicine and Respiratory Diseases, including Critical Care.
In 1990, Dr. Burgess furthered his studies in polysomnography under Professors John Remmers and Bill Whitelaw, and in 1993, he set up a two-bed sleep laboratory, which has since grown to comprise five beds at Frenchs Forest in Sydney. He has been teaching medical students for the University of Sydney since 1993, and has served as sub-dean of Manly & Mona Vale Hospitals for several years.
Dr. Burgess was appointed Clinical Associate Professor in 2002 and promoted to Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney in 2016, a position he held until 2020. As of 2021, he holds the position of Clinical Professor of Medicine at Macquarie University. Through his continued commitment to research, education, and exceptional patient care, Dr. Burgess has become a highly respected figure in the field of respiratory and sleep medicine.
