Dr Myles Coolican's profile

Dr Myles Coolican is an orthopaedic surgeon with over 40 years of experience in the field. He obtained his medical degree (MBBS) and went on to become a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). Dr Coolican specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee, with specific interests in total knee replacement and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Dr Coolican received his training in Sydney and further enhanced his skills through overseas fellowships at Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge and The Cleveland Clinic, where he focused on knee surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine. During his time in Cleveland, he had the opportunity to work as an assistant team physician with professional sports teams, including the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, and Indians. Upon returning to Sydney, he continued his role as a team doctor with the NSW Waratahs, Northern Suburbs, and Gordon Rugby Clubs.

Since 1981, Dr Coolican has been a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal North Shore Hospital. In this role, he not only provides excellent patient care but also trains fellows and orthopaedic trainees. He has been actively involved in the education and mentorship of future orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr Coolican's practice focuses on the surgical treatment of knee problems. He has extensive experience in computer-navigated knee arthroplasty and lower limb realignment for arthritis and deformity. His expertise also extends to treating injuries to the ACL and other knee supporting structures. With a passion for providing the best possible care to his patients, Dr Coolican performs over 200 total knee replacements and more than 75 ACL reconstructions annually. Additionally, he undertakes procedures such as Revision Knee Replacements, Arthroscopic Knee Surgery, and High Tibial Osteotomy.

In 2002, Dr Coolican co-founded the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute with Dr David Parker. He actively engages in research, focusing on injuries and diseases of the knee joint. Dr Coolican frequently presents his findings at national and international meetings and publishes in reputable orthopaedic journals. He has also contributed chapters to orthopaedic texts, further showcasing his expertise in the field.

Dr Coolican is involved with several international orthopaedic organizations, including the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), and the Warhog Society. These collaborations allow him to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in his field and maintain a network of esteemed colleagues.

Outside of his professional commitments, Dr Coolican enjoys spending quality time with his family. He also has a passion for golfing and enjoys regular touch rugby games with friends on weekends. His overseas experience and connections with renowned international colleagues have made him a well-respected and valuable member of the orthopaedic community.
