Prof Michael Poulsen

Professor Michael Poulsen is an experienced radiation oncologist based in North Lakes, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. With a wealth of knowledge and expertise in both public and private oncology, he is committed to providing exceptional care to his patients. Prof Poulsen's professional journey started at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH), where he underwent his training. In 1989, he further expanded his skills by spending time at the renowned Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

As one of the founding directors of Icon Cancer Centre, Prof Poulsen plays an integral role in the development and delivery of oncology services. He currently practices at Icon Cancer Centre North Lakes, where he continues to make a significant impact in the field.

An avid researcher, Prof Poulsen has published extensively, with over 150 peer-reviewed publications to his name. His primary areas of research interest include head and neck cancer, skin cancer, and in particular, merkel cell carcinoma of the skin. Through his involvement as a principal investigator for TROG (Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group) 91.01 and 96.07, he has established a wide network of international collaboration. This has resulted in the publication of several articles on Phase II and III trials, along with a meta-analysis of fractionation trials for radiotherapy of the head and neck. Prof Poulsen collaborates with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, allied health professionals, and surgeons in Australia and New Zealand to further advance the field.

Prof Poulsen maintains an active role within The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR), holding Life Membership. His dedication and contributions to the field were recognized by RANZCR in 2020 when he was awarded the prestigious Roentgen Medal. This honor acknowledges Fellows who have made significant contributions to the College.

Prof Poulsen's clinical interests lie primarily in head and neck cancer, breast cancer, and skin cancer. He actively participates in multidisciplinary meetings for breast and lung cancer at St Vincent's Northside, further enhancing his expertise and providing comprehensive care to his patients. With his exceptional medical knowledge, extensive experience, and commitment to research and advancement, Prof Michael Poulsen is a trusted and respected figure in the field of radiation oncology.
