Dr Lewis Lam is a highly skilled and passionate ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal surgery. With over a decade of experience, Dr Lam has established himself as a leading expert in the field. He is currently based in Southport, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, and is affiliated with Short Street Day Surgery.
Dr Lam completed his medical degree, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, at the prestigious University of Otago in New Zealand in 2009. He then pursued his specialty training in ophthalmology at various hospitals throughout New Zealand, where he gained extensive exposure to a wide range of eye diseases. During this time, he developed a particular interest in vitreoretinal surgery and further refined his skills through a fellowship with Drs. Stephen Guest and David Worseley in New Zealand’s North Island.
Prior to his relocation to the Gold Coast, Dr Lam served as a full-time Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Christchurch Public Hospital. In addition to his vitreoretinal expertise, he also participated in both the retinal and general on-call roster, gaining invaluable experience in managing a variety of eye conditions.
Dr Lam is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology and has a special interest in cataract and refractive lens surgery. To enhance his expertise in this area, he completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Cataract and Laser Refractive surgery at the University of Sydney.
With his extensive vitreoretinal training, Dr Lam is well-equipped to diagnose and treat diseases affecting the back of the eye, including retinal detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and diabetic retinopathy. His expertise also allows him to manage complex cataract cases involving complications such as a dislocated lens or an iris defect.
In addition to his vitreoretinal practice, Dr Lam offers treatment for various eye conditions, including glaucoma, pterygium, macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetes, uveitis, and other general ophthalmological conditions. He is committed to providing the best possible care for his patients, prioritizing their comfort, safety, and optimal outcomes.
Dr Lam is fluent in English and Mandarin and offers consultations in both languages. He understands the importance of accessibility to healthcare and runs evening and weekend emergency clinics, ensuring his patients have timely access to his expertise outside of regular office hours. Dr Lam's personal philosophy is to treat his patients with the same level of care and dedication he would provide to his own family members.
